(d) Laws Pertaining to Kingship (vv. 14-20)

14When you go into the land which the Lord your God is about to give to you, and you take possession of it and you dwell in it, then you will say: I will appoint a king over me, just like all the nations who are round about me.

15You shall indeed appoint a king over you, whom the Lord your God shall choose. You shall appoint a king over yöu from among your brethren; you may not set over you a foreign man, who is not your brother.

16Only he is not to increase for himself horses, and he is not to make the people return to Egypt in order to increase horses, for the Lord has said to you: You shall not return in this way again.

17And he is not to increase for himself wives, or his heart may turn aside; and he is not to increase greatly for himself silver and gold.

18And it shall be that when he sits upon the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the copy before the priests, the Levites.

19And it shall be with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, in order that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and by doing them,

20so that his heart is not exalted above his brothers, and so that he does not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, in order that he may prolong his days over his kingdom, he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.
